If you have a bank card you can use that too.
Depending on the hotel, you can do a direct bank to bank transfer ( "Wire" in the USA/Canada) but most major US or European based chain hotels will only do credit cards. The Courtyard Marriot in Frankfurt used to accept US dollar American Express traveller's checks and will convert them for you (5 years ago anyway). Best bet is to have a goood friend or a parent reserve the room for you with a credit card. You can always pay cash when you check out.
