There is an excellent scenic route from Dungloe to Letterkenny.
There is a good walk around the Dunlewy National park, it take you round some lovely lakes and to a castle, where there is a museum.
Have you thought about walking up Errigal Mountain, should only take you a couple of hours and you do no really need and specialist equipment apart from the usual walking gear. From the top you can see an incredible lake with swans on. Also, apparently on a clear day you can see Scotland.
But to be perfectly honest, you can go walking everywhere because there are paths everywhere and the scenery is amazing all over. I highly recommend the North West.
Also, its perectly normal and safe to hitch lifts in Donegal, so you can get around easily that way.
