I think you need to check your embassy first.
But you may not need one. Only people for some countries need to have a visa. Check this link from the french ministry of foreign affairs. It will tell you if you need a visa, and if you need one, where to get it, and for what fee.

oh and don't worry it is very easy to get to France, they accept anyone, which is a big difference with the U.S
btw, the first answer is totally out of line, basically suggesting you go and stay illegally.
one thing is not to need a TOURISM visa, but everyone- even EU members- need some sort of residence permit.
