I flew to SA with Yemenia Airlines for £320 from London in the hieght of Summer the nearest equivelent flight was £600 at the time. Though at this time of year there are a lot of good deals check out air france and Luftansa.
It was a great flight as I had a stop over in The Yemen which was brilliant.
When in South Africa, there are loads of Back Packers for about £10 a night or less. Most are listed on the net and all I stayed in were of a very high standard, usually with pools etc and various room options.
Personally if you can afford to hire a car I think it will give you more flexibility as SA seems geared for up for the motor vehicle.
Why not get up to Zimbabwe, its really cheap, and I think probably safer (providing you dont wear "I am here to shoot Bob" t-shirt). For example we took in May a overnight train from Harare to Mutare with a sleeper for £1.40!

go on ebay and buy something from someone in south africa and send them a fake check for ten thousan dollars more than what it is worth and tell them to send you the difference by western union. they do it to us all the time.
There is no cheap and safe way of getting to South Africa. Your best bet is to go on the net and search for the cheapest flight.
Get your flights through expedia, lastminute or the like, if you book in advance should be about £500 return to Jo'burg, a bit cheaper if you are lucky. If you want to fly somewhere else within SA I use kalula.com (SA's easyjet) it's often cheaper that booking direct. Avoid Christmas time, fares are sky high.
Carhire for a small hatch back £15 and day, maybe cheaper. Petrol, 50p a litre.
If you are planning to stay at the coast book a holiday apartment with a local agency, they are very easy to get and cheap, had great 3 bedroom holiday apartment last year on the South coast of Natal for 4 night and it cost £15 a night , booze and entertainment still cheap but starting to get more expensive
There is no such thing as cheap in south africa you even pay to go to the bathroom.Live with someone you know and has a car.
hide in a box on a "import wine ship" then get off just before you reach bay!
