You need a valid photo I Card to book a tatkal ticket. You also have to pay a premium depending upon season of your travel. Apart from this you can book tatkal ticket from the Railway reservation counter, just lke ordinary reservation ticket. You can also buy from irctc.co.in. But beware, buy a Tatkal ticket only if you are sure about your journey plans. You get no refund on Tatkal ticket if you cancel it.
Tatkal booking starts at 2 days before the scheduled day of train, Try to be first in the queue that day becoz it fills within 5 - 10 mins somtimes, dont forget to take laminized I D card with photo and numbers.
